Eyelash Cup / Grazer, 2021

Eyelash Cup / Grazer is meant to be a shy and skitish herbivore, one you might find in herds or flocks of hundreds of individuals. I imagine them to be sensitive to cold weather, and typically migrating with the seasons.

It’s cup structure is made with a wire armature and wood glue paper mache. The translucent panels are shellacked rice paper. This Grazer actually has a hollow belly filled with stones polished by the Pacific Ocean. Some say this is to aid in digestion of the fibrous materials it favors. Others think it is a reference to the repetive, unceasing need for living things to consume other living things, not unlike the way waves repeatedly roll stones against one another.

I made the striated pattern by selecting both sapwood and heartwood from the walnut tree and alternating them in layers.
