Soft-Spalted Black Birch Display Bowl

This piece of Black Birch was so soft and punky that I almost couldn’t work with it. The highway department had cut down a bunch of threatening standing dead trees and I decided to see what would happen if I put some of the wood on my lathe. This bowl is super weird. The wood is soft and has patterns in it unlike other things I have worked with. I’d suggest you use this as a display bowl, because I’m not convinced it would handle food well. A totally unique piece, one I’m proud of.
